Seagate Technology Cor was established in 1979 and is currently the world's largest manufacturer of hard disks, magnetic disks, and read-write heads, headquartered in Scott Valley, California. Seagate is a global leader in the design, manufacture and sale of hard drives, providing products for enterprises, desktop computers, mobile devices and consumer electronics.
At present, Seagate has a large number of Inspur servers in the data centers in California, Malaysia and other places in the United States, including different models and numerous configurations; through Inspur physical infrastructure management platform (ISPIM), Seagate has realized the unified management of multiple data centers and heterogeneous equipment, meeting the O&M requirements in equipment configuration and monitoring.
Challenges
Starting in 2019, Seagate has successively purchased nearly 1,000 Inspur servers, which are distributed in multiple data centers around the world. Seagate's O&M team hopes to be able to manage multiple data center equipment through a unified platform. The requirements include:
1. Unified asset management: Not only Inspur server but also other manufacturers' equipment can be added to the platform.
2. Batch OS deployment: Does not rely on the traditional PXE method to achieve convenient OS batch deployment.
3. Batch device configuration: Able to modify various device configurations as needed, such as BIOS related settings, RAID configuration, BMC common settings, user name and password, etc.
4. Firmware batch update: When a new firmware patch is released, the device firmware can be updated in batches without affecting the operation of in-band services.
5. Unified presentation of multiple data centers: support 3D view of data centers, unified management of multiple data centers in different locations.
In this context, Inspur provided the ISPIM, which successfully solved the problems Seagate faced and helped to realize the unified O&M of the equipment.
ISPIM is positioned as the industry data center operation and maintenance management software, and is a full life cycle operation and maintenance management platform for physical infrastructure.
The platform has functions such as resource allocation, active / passive monitoring, real-time performance monitoring, alarm receiving / pushing, topology display, 3D computer room, energy consumption management, operating system deployment, asset maintenance and other functions.
ISPIM can realize the unified management of servers, storage, network equipment, and firewalls, which can effectively help enterprises improve operation and maintenance efficiency, reduce operation and maintenance costs, and ensure the safe, reliable, and stable operation of data centers.
ISPIM can be widely used in private cloud, data center, industry and enterprise customers. It also provides Restful, SNMP and other interfaces to facilitate user integration and docking.
ISPIM Platform Architecture Diagram:
In response to Seagate's O&M requirements, ISPIM provides the following overall solution:
ISPIM implements equipment asset management through standard management protocols, including IPMI, SNMP, Redfish, SMI-S. Through ISPIM, Seagate not only achieved unified management of Inspur servers, but also incorporated equipment from other manufacturers into the ISPIM platform for unified management.
ISPIM can use the BMC out-of-band management network to achieve the deployment of the OS. Compared with the traditional PXE deployment method, it does not require any changes to the customer's network. With sufficient network bandwidth, it is even possible to implement unified deployment of OS across regions and data centers. At the same time, ISPIM has a built-in image library, users can flexibly maintain the image file system.
Seagate's O&M engineers need to regularly modify the password of the BMC administrator and the passwords of IPMI and SNMP for the server in the data center. Through ISPIM, this operation can be easily completed.
As Seagate purchases Inspur servers in batches, when new devices arrives and need to be online, their firmware configurations need to be consistent with those of the existing devices. Through ISPIM, Seagate has achieved rapid alignment of BMC/BIOS versions and configurations. Besides, when the firmware version is updated, the efficiency of server firmware batch version change becomes very convenient.
In fact, the control module of ISPIM is not only as simple as the above. By integrating hardware configuration templates and management strategies, ISPIM can achieve the baseline management of server firmware, provide template-based monitoring and rapid changes, and realize the statelessness of equipment.
The Stateless Management of ISPIM:
The 3D computer room function of ISPIM can completely restore the space and equipment layout of the data center, integrate power consumption and alarm information, and visualize the parameters of the data center, the operation status is clear at a glance.
3D Data Center Example:
In addition, the V2.1.1 ISPIM integrates the industry's advanced power consumption modules, based on the equipment's energy consumption, temperature, airflow, CUPS and other data, through the AI algorithm for data filtering, aggregation and analysis, and provides multi-dimensional power consumption Information display. At the same time, it supports custom power consumption models, and analyzes and predicts intelligent power consumption trends based on historical data to facilitate users' business allocation and migration.
ISPIM Energy Management:
With Inspur ISPIM, Seagate has realized unified asset management of multiple data centers and heterogeneous equipment, meeting the O&M needs of monitoring and equipment configuration changing. From firmware configuration alignment to batch update, Seagate achieves one-click change of Inspur server configuration through ISPIM, which significantly improves O&M efficiency.
Customer Testimonial
“Through the Inspur ISPIM, Seagate has unified asset management across multiple data centers. Containing heterogeneous compute hardware, the ISPIM is providing centralized control of physical server configurations as well as centralized monitoring. ISPIM offers the batch servers configuration management and Seagate is heading towards leveraging the feature. Seagate believes this feature will help with scalability and will improve efficiency and ROI significantly.” Felix Najer
